Goldberg Variations, an album by JS Bach, Peter Serkin, is a masterpiece that showcases the genius of Bach's music combined with Serkin's impeccable performance. The album features 30 variations on an original aria, each one unique in its own way, yet seamlessly connected to the others. Serkin's interpretation of the variations is nothing short of brilliant. He captures the essence of each variation, giving it a distinct character and mood, while maintaining the overall structure and flow of the piece.

The album opens with the serene and delicate aria, which sets the tone for the variations to follow. Serkin's performance of the aria is gentle and refined, with a lightness of touch that is both elegant and moving. As the variations progress, Serkin takes the listener on a journey through a range of emotions and moods, from the playful and whimsical to the somber and contemplative.

One of the highlights of the album is Variation 25, which is often referred to as the "Black Pearl". Serkin's rendition of this variation is haunting and evocative, with a sense of mystery and depth that is both captivating and mesmerizing.

About JS Bach, Peter Serkin

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .

More-than-impressive performance. Enjoy it more than almost any other, especially the clarity of the bass giving us the variations. His dad would always have been very proud of him. Thank you for the upload - to be treasured and replayed ad infinitum.

The performance is lovely. I wonder what people think of this performance compared to Glenn Gould's 1981 recording?

In a brief exercise, I compared their two versions of variation 14 and I have to say that Gould retains a bit more spark, vitality and clarity (with regard to the trills) than Serkin.

From the opening notes, Peter Serkin already engages the listener to a journey of the spirit. What an exhilarating voyage and one realizes pleasant surprises. Thanks for the route.

at 8:15 the 5th variation was played in a super-slow tempo suitable for educational purposes and i had to adjust the speed to 1.5 to recall what Gould could have done with it.
